Aerobic capacity is the single best-measured predictor of how long you stay independent — and it is the one most people over 50 have never had measured. This course shows you how to measure it without a laboratory, what your number means, and what changes it.

What it covers

Six modules

  1. Why oxygen is the constraint. What cardiorespiratory fitness actually measures, and why it tracks with independence rather than athletic performance.
  2. What declines, and how fast. The trajectory of aerobic capacity after 50, and which part of it reflects disuse rather than age.
  3. Measuring without a lab. Three validated field tests — the Cooper 12-minute walk or run, the Rockport one-mile walk, and the six-minute walk — and how to choose the right one for your current level.
  4. Reading your result. How your number compares against age- and sex-matched normative bands, and what a band means in daily terms.
  5. What moves the number. The training variables that change aerobic capacity, at doses that are realistic after 50.
  6. Where it connects. How aerobic capacity interacts with strength, balance and recovery — the four pillars are read together, and a change in one shifts the others.
Who it is for

Adults over 50 who want the number, not the slogan

It suits you if you are active or returning to activity and want to know where you actually stand; if you have been told to "do more cardio" without being told how much or how to check; or if you are a clinician looking for field-test material you can hand to a patient.

It is educational, not a substitute for care. It does not diagnose, and it will not tell you that anything is reversed or cured.

The calculator is part of the course

Enrolment includes the VO₂max field-test calculator — all three tests, scored against normative bands, with a printable report you can take to a physician or keep as a baseline. It is a tool you use again every few months, not a one-off result.

The course screens before it prescribes

A post-exertional malaise check runs before any training guidance appears. For someone who screens positive, progressive loading is not merely suboptimal — it is the wrong path, and the course routes to pacing instead. Your score still displays; only the prescriptive guidance is held back.

Every equation is published and cited

The field tests are not proprietary and the course does not pretend otherwise. Each estimate uses a published regression, and the course names it so you can check it:

  • Cooper 12-minute test — Cooper KH, JAMA, 1968.
  • Rockport one-mile walk — Kline GM et al., Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 1987.
  • Six-minute walk — Burr JF et al., 2011 (PMID 21673494).
  • Age-predicted maximum heart rate — Tanaka H et al., 208 − 0.7 × age.

Claims in the course are graded Established, Promising, or Unproven-Bridge. Where the Muscle-Meta Matrix™ framing goes beyond what a citation supports, it is labelled as a hypothesis rather than presented as mechanism.
